Kindergarten

My village is called Laurechowk in Chitwan, 14km north from Sauraha. I still cannot see my village on the map because it is still forest on the map. The village has been settled for long time but not a single family has got a land ownership certificate from the government. Most of us have small piece of land hardly enough to build a house for living. All of us are daily wages workers. We are not farmers because we don't have land to grow crops. We work daily and buy essential commodities to feed the family. There is a caste system in Nepal and most of the families in my village are from the lower caste.

The children come from poor families. Their parents are not able to send their children to private kindergarten because it is costly. I am doing my best to pick those kids and care them in the day so especially their mothers get some time to be free and can do some work to earn a little bit of money. There are also children who are living with relatives, mostly with grandparents because their parents have gone away in search of work to earn money.

I have very small space in my house for up to 20 children. It is a pre-primary concept of the school for children aged 3 to 4 years old. They come during the day from 10 to 4, like school time. They are kept clean and tidy. We feed them one meal a day and prepare them for school, things like the alphabet. The children are there for a one year and then start grade 1 community school.

My two cousin sisters have been taking care of them; they are also college students.

There is no community kindergarten in the village. I grew up like this in the village and still there are no changes. There is no investment or progress. I would like to build a proper pre-school.
